Leah Ivory is a classically trained pianist who has been accompanying ensembles for the past 25 years. She has worked with ensembles and musicians at Calvin College, St Cecilia Music Society, the North American Choral Company, and is currently the assistant director and accompanist for the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Choruses. That feeling of “being in the groove” with fellow musicians is what she loves most about ensemble work, and it is also what made her fall in love with West African traditional music. After a trip to Ghana in 2006, Leah began immersing herself in the West African drum and dance culture. She has studied with a variety of teachers, including Ryan Edwards, Michael Taylor, Michael Markus, Bolokada Conde, M’Bemba Bangoura, and most closely with Mamady Keita. She recently completed her certification through the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy, an international school founded by Mamady Keita.
